Te mapa
Marawi City sits on the northern shore of Lake Lanao, one of the largest lakes in the Philippines, on a plateau in the interior of Mindanao. From above, the town curves along the water, with its streets rising onto rolling hills behind it. The lake fills much of the frame, a broad sheet of open water reaching away to the south.
The Agus River leaves the lake at Marawi and flows north toward Iligan Bay, powering a chain of hydroelectric plants along the way. The river's outlet cuts through the town's plan. Up on the hills to the east, the large campus of Mindanao State University forms its own district of roads, buildings and green space.
Marawi is the capital of Lanao del Sur and is known as the Islamic City of Marawi, the centre of Maranao culture. Its central districts are being rebuilt after the 2017 siege. A Marawi City map poster records the lasting geography underneath: the lakeshore, the river outlet and the hills that give the city its outline.
The city follows the lake's northern edge. The long, gently curving shoreline separates a mass of streets from a wide expanse of open water.
The Agus drains Lake Lanao at Marawi and heads north. On the map its channel leaves the lake and runs away through the town.
Mindanao State University occupies a large hilltop area with its own network of roads and grounds, forming a distinct zone apart from the town centre.
