Valencia lies on the Bukidnon plateau in northern Mindanao, a high, rolling landscape between mountain ranges. On the map, the town centre forms a compact cluster of streets where main roads meet, and from there neighbourhoods and farmland spread across the plateau. River valleys cut into the terrain and draw curving lines through otherwise open ground.
The name NIA refers to the National Irrigation Administration, reflecting the area's role in agriculture. The surrounding land is dedicated to crops such as rice, maize and sugarcane. The Pulangi River, one of Mindanao's major rivers, flows through the region, and Lake Apo, a small crater lake, lies within the city's wider territory.
