Te mapa
Iligan lies on the northern coast of Mindanao, facing Iligan Bay, with steep green uplands rising close behind the shore. The city is compact along the coastline and reaches into valleys inland, and its map is defined by a long waterfront, a harbour and roads that follow the coast east towards Cagayan de Oro and west along the bay.
It is often called the City of Majestic Waterfalls, a name that reflects the many cascades in its hills. The best known is Maria Cristina Falls on the Agus River, which carries water down from Lake Lanao and powers hydroelectric plants that supply much of Mindanao. That power helped Iligan grow into an industrial centre.
Industrial areas, port facilities and residential districts share a narrow coastal strip, while the uplands beyond hold the river gorges and falls. An Iligan map poster presents this sequence from sea to hills: the bay, the working waterfront, the streets of the centre and the valleys leading up towards the interior of Mindanao.
The city stretches along the bay in a long coastal band, with port facilities and industrial sites marking the waterfront and residential streets rising behind them.
The river descends from Lake Lanao through the hills and reaches the sea at Iligan, a winding line that carries the water behind the city's best-known falls.
Inland, the street pattern gives way to steep, green terrain, where valleys and ridges shape the roads and hold the waterfalls that give Iligan its nickname.
