Ðà Lạt lies on the Lâm Viên plateau in Vietnam's Central Highlands, around 1,500 metres above sea level. The French developed it as a hill station in the early twentieth century, and the cool climate still defines the town. Instead of a grid, the map shows roads that follow the contours, looping around hills and valleys in soft, irregular curves.
At the centre lies Xuan Huong Lake, a crescent-shaped reservoir created in the colonial period, whose outline anchors any Ðà Lạt map poster. Around it the market area, old villas and the former railway station are scattered across the slopes, while further south the larger Tuyen Lam Lake sits among forested hills.
Da Lat is known across Vietnam for its flowers, vegetables and pine forests, and many hillsides around the town are covered with greenhouses.
