Dormentes is a municipality in western Pernambuco, deep in Brazil's semi-arid sertão. The town is compact, laid out in a simple grid of streets around a central square, and from above it appears as a small, clear shape surrounded by wide open land. A few roads lead out toward neighbouring towns, cutting straight lines through the landscape.
The surrounding vegetation is caatinga, the dry scrubland typical of north-eastern Brazil, and the land is used for goat and cattle raising and small farms. Seasonal streams and reservoirs appear on the map as thin lines and irregular patches. The larger city of Petrolina, on the São Francisco River, lies to the south-west.
