Dunbage lies in southwestern Xinjiang, on the western edge of the Tarim Basin, in the oasis country around Kashgar. From above, it is a settlement defined by water. Irrigation canals branch across the land, and the cultivated area forms a sharply edged patch against the dry plain around it.
Towns in this part of Xinjiang depend on meltwater carried down from the mountains to the south and west. Poplar-lined roads and canals divide the oasis into long, narrow fields and orchards. Villages and small centres sit along these routes, and the map reads almost like a diagram of irrigation.
