Te mapa
East Boston began as a cluster of islands in Boston Harbor, the largest of them Noddle's Island, and nineteenth-century landfill stitched them into a single piece of ground. On the map it is surrounded almost entirely by water: the inner harbour to the south and west, Chelsea Creek to the north, and the reclaimed flats that now carry Logan International Airport to the east.
The street grid is regular and compact, laid out when the area was developed as a planned district in the 1830s, and it runs down to a waterfront of piers and former shipyards. Donald McKay built famous clipper ships here in the mid-1800s. The Sumner, Callahan and Ted Williams tunnels, along with the Blue Line, connect the neighbourhood to downtown beneath the water.
Squares such as Maverick and Central anchor the grid, and Piers Park and Constitution Beach add open space at the water's edge. An East Boston map poster shows the neighbourhood as a peninsula of streets hemmed in by runways and harbour, a striking shape that makes clear how much of this corner of Boston was built on reclaimed land.
The airport's long, crossing runways fill the reclaimed land to the east, a bold geometric counterpoint to the tight residential grid beside them.
Along the western shore, piers and old shipyard edges step into the water, looking straight across the harbour toward downtown Boston and the North End.
Three road tunnels and the Blue Line run beneath the harbour to downtown, which is why no bridge crosses the water between the neighbourhood and the city centre on the map.

Koteā ko East Boston
East Boston has long been a first home for newcomers, from Irish and Italian families to more recent Latin American communities, and many people have a story that begins in these streets. A map holds the grid, the piers and the view across the water.
Set your own title and subtitle, perhaps a street name and a year, adjust the coordinates line, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files include six sizes, and matte prints ship with an optional wooden frame.
