Te mapa
Echigawa is in the Echi District of Shiga Prefecture, on the plain east of Lake Biwa. It used to be a town in its own right and is now part of Aishō. From above, the settlement stretches along a single historic road, with narrow lots running back from the street frontages and rice fields spreading out beyond them.
That road is the old Nakasendō, the inland route that connected Edo and Kyoto in the Edo period. Echigawa-juku was one of its post stations, and the long, linear form of the old town still reflects that past. The Echi River, which gives the place its name, runs nearby on its way to Lake Biwa.
An Echigawa map poster traces this simple, deeply historic shape. The line of the old highway, the fine grain of houses along it and the open rectangles of paddy fields make a composition that is quietly Japanese in its order and restraint.
The historic highway runs straight through the old post town. On the map it forms the backbone that everything else hangs from.
The river flows across the plain towards Lake Biwa and marks one edge of the settlement. It adds a natural curve to an otherwise linear layout.
Rice fields surround the town in tidy rectangles. Their even geometry gives the poster calm margins and a sense of the Ōmi plain.

Koteā ko Echigawa
Echigawa appeals to anyone who has walked the Nakasendō or has family in Shiga. Its map is a small piece of Japanese travel history that looks at home in a minimalist interior.
You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps adding Echigawa-juku or a date from your walk. Choose one of five styles, including Paper and Sand for a softer look, and print it or download the HD files.
