Te mapa
Edmonton is laid out largely on a grid of numbered streets and avenues, typical of prairie cities. The grid is broken by the North Saskatchewan River, which winds through the middle of the city in a series of wide loops. The river runs along the bottom of a deep valley, and the slopes on either side have been kept largely as parkland.
This river valley park system is often described as the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America, and on the map it forms a continuous green ribbon cutting diagonally across the grid. Bridges cross it at intervals, among them the High Level Bridge, a steel trestle that carries road traffic and a seasonal heritage streetcar. Ravines branch off the main valley into the neighbourhoods.
Further out, the Anthony Henday Drive ring road circles the city, and in the west end stands West Edmonton Mall, for years the largest shopping centre in the world. An Edmonton map poster captures the balance at the heart of the city: a strict rectangular grid softened by a winding river and its long green valley.
Wooded slopes line both sides of the North Saskatchewan, forming a continuous green band across the city that stands out sharply against the surrounding grid.
A long steel trestle spans the valley between downtown and the south side. It shows as a strong straight line across the river's curve.
Streets run north to south and avenues east to west in a regular numbered pattern, giving the map an orderly structure beyond the valley.

Koteā ko Edmonton
Edmonton suits people who grew up with its long winters and green summers, students of the University of Alberta and anyone who has walked the valley trails. The river's loops give the poster a natural focal point.
