Égkomi lies in the Ammochostos district of eastern Cyprus, a short distance inland from Famagusta and close to the ancient site of Salamis. The map shows a flat coastal plain crossed by roads, scattered village streets and open farmland, with the sea to the east and the wide bay of Famagusta beyond.
The area is best known for the ancient city of Enkomi, a major Late Bronze Age settlement and centre of the copper trade. Excavations revealed a planned city with streets crossing at right angles, one of the earliest examples of such a layout on the island.
