Te mapa
El Asintal lies in the department of Retalhuleu, on the Pacific slope of Guatemala, where the land descends from the volcanic highlands toward the coastal plain. The municipality is home to Tak'alik Ab'aj, an important archaeological site with Olmec and early Maya monuments, now a national park.
On a map, the town centre forms a small, regular grid of streets. Around it, the landscape is shaped by agriculture on the fertile slopes, with roads crossing the land between farms. Streams run down toward the coast in narrow ravines, and their lines, mostly running north to south, give the terrain its structure.
An El Asintal map poster shows a compact town within a strongly directional landscape: the slope, the watercourses and the roads all follow the descent toward the Pacific. It combines an ordinary Guatemalan town grid with the knowledge that one of the region's oldest ceremonial centres lies close by.
The archaeological site lies within the municipality, with monuments from Olmec and Maya periods. It sits among the farmland surrounding the town.
The centre follows the orderly grid common to Guatemalan towns, forming a clear block of streets in the middle of the composition.
Watercourses run down the Pacific slope in narrow ravines, adding parallel lines that show the direction of the land toward the coast.
