Te mapa
Elkton is the county seat of Cecil County in northeastern Maryland, near the Delaware state line. It sits at the head of the Elk River, where the river widens toward the northern end of Chesapeake Bay. On a map the water enters from the south, and the town is built on the ground above it.
The older part of town is organised along Main Street, with a small grid of blocks around the courthouse area. Beyond it, commercial roads, residential subdivisions and highway corridors spread out. Interstate 95 passes to the north, and other major routes cross through the area. Streams, wetlands and wooded land fill the spaces between.
In the first half of the twentieth century, Elkton was known as an elopement capital because couples came here to marry quickly. An Elkton map poster shows the historic main street, the river opening to the south and the highways connecting the town to Baltimore, Wilmington and Philadelphia.

The historic centre follows Main Street with a small, regular grid around it. It is the oldest and densest part of Elkton on the map.
Interstate 95 and other routes cross the area. They form long, strong lines that tie the town into the busy corridor between Baltimore and Philadelphia.
