Te mapa
Ellicott City was founded in 1772 by the Ellicott brothers, who built mills on the Patapsco River west of Baltimore. The historic town still sits in the narrow valley where they started, and its map is shaped by the terrain: Main Street runs uphill from the river along a stream valley, lined with stone buildings, while side streets climb the slopes in short, steep curves.
Beyond the old town, Ellicott City becomes a large suburban area and the seat of Howard County, with winding residential roads, cul-de-sacs and wooded stream corridors. The Patapsco Valley remains forested along much of its length, forming a dark edge to the map. Near the river stands the B&O station, regarded as the oldest surviving railroad station in the United States.
An Ellicott City map poster shows both sides of the place: the tight historic corridor in the valley, and the looser suburban pattern spreading across the uplands. The contrast between the two, and the strong line of the river, makes for a map with depth and character even when drawn in the simplest style.
The old commercial street follows the valley up from the river, a single narrow corridor packed with buildings that is instantly recognisable on the map.
The river runs along the eastern edge of the historic town, its wooded valley forming a natural boundary between Howard and Baltimore counties.
Away from the valley, curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs spread across the higher ground, a soft, branching pattern typical of Maryland's newer neighbourhoods.
