Empoli lies in the lower Arno valley in Tuscany, roughly midway between Florence and Pisa. The river runs along the northern edge of the town, and the historic centre sits just to its south, a compact grid of streets that once lay within medieval walls. Beyond it, newer neighbourhoods spread across the flat valley floor.
At the heart of the old town is Piazza Farinata degli Uberti, named after the Ghibelline leader who, according to tradition, argued at a council held in Empoli in 1260 against destroying Florence. The square is faced by the Romanesque Collegiata di Sant'Andrea with its striped marble façade. The town was also known for its production of green glass.
