Estavayer-le-Lac Map Poster & Print
Estavayer-le-Lac sits on the south-eastern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, in the canton of Fribourg. On a map the lake fills one side of the frame, and the old town rises just behind it: a compact pattern of streets on a low bluff, still partly enclosed by medieval walls and towers. Below, the shoreline flattens into a harbour, beaches and reed beds.
The Château de Chenaux, a thirteenth-century castle, stands at the edge of the old town and now houses the district prefecture. Fountains and the collegiate church of Saint-Laurent mark the historic centre. The town is also known for an unusual museum collection of stuffed frogs, arranged in nineteenth-century scenes of daily life.
Since 2017 the town has been part of the larger municipality of Estavayer, which joined it with several neighbouring villages.
