Fairmont lies in north-central West Virginia, where the Tygart Valley River and the West Fork River meet to form the Monongahela. That confluence defines the city's map. Rivers cut deep valleys through the hills, neighbourhoods spread up the slopes on each side, and bridges stretch high over the water to link them together.
Downtown sits on high ground above the river, with a dense grid of streets that gradually breaks into winding residential roads as the land rises and falls. Railway lines run along the riverbanks, following the level ground at the water's edge, a reminder of the coal industry that shaped the city's growth.
