Famagusta Map Poster & Print
Famagusta stands on the eastern coast of Cyprus, facing the open Mediterranean. From above, the most striking element is the old town, a roughly rectangular enclosure of Venetian fortifications. Bastions project from its corners, and a dense web of lanes fills the inside. The harbour sits directly against the walls on the seaward side, and the modern city extends outward from there to the west and south.
Inside the walls, the Gothic former Cathedral of St Nicholas is still the dominant landmark. It was converted into the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque in the sixteenth century. The citadel by the harbour is traditionally linked with the setting of Shakespeare's Othello. South of the centre lies Varosha, the beachfront district that was fenced off and largely abandoned after 1974.

Harbour and citadel
The port lies right against the walls, and the citadel at its edge guards the entrance. The old town and the sea meet in a single compact corner of the plan.
Varosha coastline
To the south, a straight line of former hotel blocks follows the sandy shore. The district has stood largely empty for decades and shows as a regular grid beside the sea.
