Te mapa
Farah is the capital of Farah Province in western Afghanistan, on the banks of the Farah River. From above, the town sits in a green strip of irrigated land within a wide, dry landscape. Streets and compounds gather near the river, and fields and orchards spread outward along canals before giving way to bare ground and distant hills.
The area has been settled for a very long time. Remains of old earthen fortifications stand near the modern town, a reminder of its long history on routes across the region. The present town has grown around and beyond them, with walled compounds and simple street networks spreading into the surrounding land.
A Farah map poster brings out the sharp contrast that shapes the place: dense, textured ground close to the water and emptiness beyond it. The river line, the canal-fed fields and the compact town make a strong, restrained composition in black and white.
The river runs past the town and supports the irrigated land around it. It is the main natural line through the composition.
Fields and orchards along the river and canals form a band of cultivation, sharply bounded by the surrounding desert.
Traces of historic earthen walls stand near the town and show how long this river valley has been settled.
