Quetta Map Poster & Print
Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, lies in a valley at an elevation of about 1,680 metres, surrounded on all sides by mountains. Ranges such as Chiltan, Murdar, Takatu and Zarghun close in around the plain, so the city has grown as a compact basin of streets with sharp edges where the slopes begin. Its name is often traced to a Pashto word for fort.
In 1935 a powerful earthquake destroyed much of the town, and the rebuilding gave it a more regular layout than many older South Asian cities. The cantonment, home to the Command and Staff College, occupies a spacious, ordered area of wide roads and open ground, distinct from the tighter bazaar streets of the civil city.
Quetta has long been a crossroads for routes toward Afghanistan and Iran, and the valley is known for its orchards of apples, grapes and other fruit, which earned it a reputation as the fruit garden of Pakistan.
