Kandahār lies on a plain in southern Afghanistan. The Arghandab River flows to the west, and rocky ridges rise close to the northwest. The present city was laid out in the eighteenth century by Ahmad Shah Durrani, founder of the modern Afghan state, who made it his capital. His plan still shapes the old quarter, which appears on a map as a compact, almost square district.
Four main bazaar streets divide the old city and meet at a central crossroads known as the Char Suq. The layout becomes a clear cross on the printed map. Around it lie tight lanes and courtyard houses. Nearby stand the Shrine of the Cloak, which holds a cloak attributed to the Prophet, and the mausoleum of Ahmad Shah.
Modern Kandahār has spread well beyond the old walls, with wider streets and newer districts along the highways to Herat and Kabul. A Kandahār map poster keeps the historic cross at its centre, surrounded by that later growth, while orchards and the river valley soften the western edge of the frame.
The four bazaar streets of the old city meet here at right angles. They form a bold cross that makes the eighteenth-century plan immediately readable.
Ahmad Shah's planned quarter appears as a dense, compact square of narrow lanes, clearly distinct from the wider and more open streets of the later districts around it.
West of the city the Arghandab River runs through a green belt of orchards and fields, adding an irregular, organic texture to the edge of the composition.

Koteā ko Kandahār
Kandahār holds deep meaning for Pashtun families and for anyone whose history is tied to southern Afghanistan. Its planned cross of bazaars is a clear, graphic shape, and on a poster it becomes something closer to a heritage print than a road map.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a family name, a village of origin or a date, and edit the coordinates line if you like. Five styles are available, from Classic black & white and Noir to Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
