Te mapa
Fenghuang, in the Xiangxi region of western Hunan, grew along the Tuo River, and the river still defines its shape. The old town sits on both banks, with rows of wooden stilt houses, the diaojiaolou, lining the water and a web of narrow lanes climbing away from it. Bridges and stepping stones connect the two sides.
The area has long been home to Miao and Tujia communities, and remains of the Southern Great Wall, a border wall built during the Ming dynasty, stand in the hills nearby. The town is also known as the birthplace of the writer Shen Congwen, whose stories are set in this landscape.
A Fenghuang map poster captures an old town that has kept its shape. The river's curves, the tight lanes of the historic centre and the looser newer districts beyond are all legible, set against the hills that close in on every side.
The Tuo River winds through the town, and its curving course, crossed by bridges and stepping stones, gives the map a central line that everything else follows.
The historic quarter is a dense web of narrow alleys and small squares, a fine-grained pattern that stands out clearly from the broader streets of the newer town.
Steep hills surround the valley, and roads twist through them in tight switchbacks, framing the town and emphasising its riverside setting.

Koteā ko Fenghuang
Fenghuang is a place people remember long after a visit, for its river, lanterns and old houses on stilts. A map is a quiet and precise way to hold on to that memory.
