Ferndale is a small, densely built city in Oakland County, just north of Detroit. Its edges are easy to read on a map: Eight Mile Road runs along the south, Interstate 696 crosses the north, and Woodward Avenue cuts through the middle on a slight diagonal. Between them, residential streets form a close, regular grid of narrow lots and short blocks.
Downtown sits where Nine Mile Road meets Woodward, a compact strip of shops, restaurants and bars that draws people from across metro Detroit. The city has a reputation as one of Michigan's most welcoming communities for LGBTQ residents, and Woodward itself is the route of the annual Woodward Dream Cruise, when classic cars fill the avenue.
