Forquilha is a municipality in the north of Ceará, in Brazil's semi-arid sertão, a short distance from the regional centre of Sobral. Its name means fork in Portuguese. From above, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets in a wide landscape of caatinga scrub, farmland and dirt roads, where water shapes everything else.
The most striking element on the map is the Forquilha reservoir, an açude built to store water through the long dry season, whose irregular shoreline spreads across the land near town.
