Frederick lies in central Maryland, between Baltimore, Washington and the mountains of western Maryland. From above, the historic downtown forms a compact grid of streets. Carroll Creek runs through it, landscaped as a linear park with walkways and bridges. Around the old centre, highways such as I-70, I-270 and US 15 form a wide frame.
The city is known for the church spires that rise over the downtown and for its well-preserved historic district. Francis Scott Key, who wrote the words of the national anthem, is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery here. Barbara Fritchie, who became a legend of the Civil War, is also remembered in Frederick.
