Fuyu lies in western Heilongjiang, in north-east China, on the broad Songnen Plain. The land here is almost completely flat, and from above the town is laid out as a regular grid of straight streets and large blocks. Few hills or coastlines interrupt it, so the geometry of the roads sets the tone of the whole map.
Beyond the built-up area, the plain opens into farmland, with long straight roads and field boundaries continuing the same orderly pattern into the countryside. The Nen River flows through the wider area, and its channels and wetlands form a softer contrast to the ruled lines of town and fields. Winters here are long and cold, and the plain is one of China's important grain-growing regions.
