Te mapa
Gbabam is in the south-west of Ivory Coast, in the Bas-Sassandra district, an area of humid forest largely turned over to cocoa, coffee and other crops. From above, the town grows along its roads. A central area of houses and shops thins out into smaller lanes and compounds, and beyond them lies farmland.
The surrounding landscape is thickly vegetated, with small streams and plantations crossed by tracks. On a map, this appears as wide, calm space around the town. The roads leading in and out are the clearest lines, linking Gbabam to nearby towns and markets.
A Gbabam map poster shows the town as it actually is: a settlement shaped by its roads and by the agricultural land that supports it. Without names or colour, the pattern of streets and the open land around them become the whole subject.
The roads that lead into Gbabam form the backbone of the map. Houses and businesses gather along them, giving the town a slightly stretched shape.
Smaller lanes and compounds fill the space between the main roads, forming a finer, less regular pattern at the heart of the town.
Plantations and forest surround the town. On the poster they read as open space, which makes the network of streets stand out clearly.
