General Güemes lies east of the city of Salta, in the warmer, lower country of northwestern Argentina. It is named after Martín Miguel de Güemes, the regional hero of the independence wars. From above, the town follows the classic Argentine pattern: square blocks arranged in an even grid around a central plaza.
The town grew with the railways, and track lines and yards still leave a visible mark on its layout, cutting across the grid at their own angle. Beyond the edge of town, agriculture takes over, and large rectangular fields stretch across the valley floor under the eastern foothills of the Andes.
