Te mapa
Genoa is shaped by a lack of flat land. The city stretches for kilometres along the Ligurian coast, pinned between the sea and the steep slopes of the Apennines, with neighbourhoods pushing inland up the Polcevera and Bisagno valleys. On a map it reads as a narrow ribbon of streets, docks and breakwaters, with roads climbing the hills in tight hairpin bends.
At its centre lies one of the largest medieval old towns in Europe, a dense web of narrow lanes called caruggi that crowd right up to the old harbour. Just above them run the Strade Nuove, Renaissance streets lined with palaces. Together with the Rolli palace system, they were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006.
The port fills the western waterfront with long piers and the Lanterna, the old lighthouse that has become the city's symbol. A Genoa map poster captures this compressed drama: the knot of old streets, the orderly quays, the elevated coastal road and the hillside switchbacks. It holds all of it in a single frame for the city traditionally linked with Christopher Columbus.
The old town is a tangle of narrow alleys so tightly packed that on a map they merge into a fine, almost woven pattern beside the old harbour.
Long piers and breakwaters reach into the sea along the western waterfront, where the Lanterna lighthouse marks the entrance to one of the Mediterranean's major ports.
Above the centre, roads climb the slopes in tight zigzags, linking terraced neighbourhoods and giving the upper half of the map a distinctive winding texture.
