Te mapa
Giannitsá sits at the foot of Mount Paiko on the northern edge of a broad, flat plain in Central Macedonia, west of Thessaloniki. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets with a busy centre, and newer neighbourhoods spread into the fields around it. To the south lies the bed of the former Lake of Giannitsa, now a regular network of fields and drainage canals.
The lake was drained in the twentieth century to create farmland, which transformed the landscape around the town. A few kilometres east lie the remains of ancient Pella, the capital of the Macedonian kingdom and birthplace of Alexander the Great. Under Ottoman rule the town was called Yenice-i Vardar and was an important regional centre.
A Giannitsá map poster captures the meeting of town and plain: the dense central streets, the long straight roads across the fields and the precise canals of the old lake bed. In black and white, the geometry of the drained plain gives the map a strong, almost architectural quality. It suits residents, emigrants and history lovers alike.
South of town, the drained lake has become a patchwork of rectangular fields and straight canals, a strikingly geometric farming landscape that dominates any wider view.
The centre is laid out on a fairly regular street pattern. A denser core of shops and squares sits in the middle, with residential blocks spreading out toward the plain.
The archaeological site of Pella lies a short distance east, and a wider crop of the map links the modern town with the former capital of Macedon.

Koteā ko Giannitsá
Giannitsá appeals to people with family roots on the Macedonian plain and to those drawn by its closeness to ancient Pella. A map of the town shows how modern streets and an old landscape fit together in one clear design.
