Githunguri, in Kiambu County, lies in the highlands north of Nairobi. The land here is a series of parallel ridges separated by stream valleys, and the roads follow the ridge tops. From above, the town appears as a compact centre on high ground, with minor roads running along the crests and small farms covering the slopes.
This is farming country, especially for tea and dairy. Githunguri is well known in Kenya for its dairy cooperative, one of the largest in the country, which collects milk from smallholders across the surrounding hills. The small plots and hedgerows produce a fine, detailed texture on the map.
