Glassboro sits in Gloucester County in southern New Jersey, southeast of Philadelphia. From above, the map is dominated by the campus of Rowan University, whose buildings, lawns and athletic fields fill a large area near the centre. Around it, residential streets spread in a mix of grid and curving suburban patterns, fading into woods and fields.
The town takes its name from glassmaking, an industry started here in the late eighteenth century by the Stanger family. In 1967 Glassboro hosted a summit between President Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin, held at Hollybush, a mansion on the campus of what was then Glassboro State College.
