Göksun sits high in the interior of Kahramanmaraş province, on an upland basin well above the lowland plains to the south. From above, the town reads as a tight cluster of streets surrounded by broad, lightly marked terrain: fields, pasture and the long folds of the surrounding mountains. The contrast between the dense centre and the open land around it gives the map a clear, simple silhouette.
The town takes its name from the Göksu, a stream that runs through the district and feeds into the wider river systems of southern Turkey. On a Göksun map poster the watercourse is one of the few curving lines in an otherwise compact street pattern, and it helps anchor the town within the plateau.
