Gorjī-ye Soflá lies in Razavi Khorasan, very close to the edge of Mashhad, on the broad plain of north-eastern Iran. The name marks it as the lower of two related settlements, soflá being the Persian word for lower. Places like this once stood on their own in farmland and now sit in the path of a fast-growing city.
