Grenchen lies in the canton of Solothurn at the foot of the Jura mountains, on the wide plain that runs down to the Aare. The town is known for its watch industry: from the nineteenth century onwards it grew around watch and movement factories, and it remains an important site for Swiss watchmaking today.
