Groningen is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands, and its historic centre is easy to pick out from above. The Diepenring, a continuous ring of canals, almost completely encloses the old town along the line of the former city defences. Inside it, streets converge on the Grote Markt and the Vismarkt, the two large squares that have been the city's main public spaces for centuries.
Beside the Grote Markt rises the Martinitoren, the tower of the Martinikerk and a symbol of the city. The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, is one of the oldest in the country, and students make up a large share of the population. In the 1970s the city divided its centre into sectors that cars cannot drive between directly, which helped make cycling the main way to get around.
Outside the canal ring, nineteenth- and twentieth-century neighbourhoods spread in every direction, crossed by waterways such as the Eemskanaal and the Noord-Willemskanaal. The Groninger Museum stands on its own island opposite the central station. A Groningen map poster shows how clearly water defines the old city, with the flat, canal-cut countryside of the province around it.

The main square lies at the heart of the city beside the Martinitoren. It is a broad open space that most of the old streets lead into.
Waterways such as the Eemskanaal lead from the centre toward the countryside and the coast, adding long straight lines to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Koteā ko Groningen
Groningen is a natural choice for university alumni, people who have cycled its streets for years and anyone with roots in the northern Netherlands. The canal ring makes it one of the easiest cities of its size to recognise from above.
