Grozny is the capital of the Chechen Republic in the North Caucasus, spread across the valley of the Sunzha river, which curves through the city. It began in 1818 as a Russian fortress, and the city later grew with the oil industry. On a map, wide straight avenues cross the river and lead out into regular residential districts on both banks.
Much of the centre was rebuilt in the 2000s and 2010s, and the new layout is visible from above in its generous boulevards, open squares and landscaped embankments. The Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque, known as the Heart of Chechnya, stands in the centre, and the tall Grozny City towers rise close by along the Sunzha.
Beyond the centre, the street grid loosens into suburbs, industrial zones and open plains that lead south toward the Caucasus mountains.
