Te mapa
Vladikavkaz grew from a Russian fortress founded in 1784 where the Terek River leaves the mountains. The name means roughly 'ruler of the Caucasus', and the setting explains it. The city stands at the northern gate of the range, where the Georgian Military Road begins its climb toward the Darial Gorge and Tbilisi.
On a map the Terek runs north through the middle of town, crossed by a series of bridges, and the historic centre is laid out in a regular grid along its banks. Prospekt Mira, the long pedestrian avenue, is easy to trace as a straight line through the old centre. Newer districts spread north and west across flatter ground.
To the south the streets stop abruptly as the land rises into forested slopes. A Vladikavkaz map poster captures the contrast between an orderly lowland grid and the mountains just past its edge, a composition few cities of this size can offer.
The fast-flowing Terek runs the length of the city. Its channel and embankments form the strongest line on the poster, joined across by several road bridges and footbridges.
The city's main pedestrian avenue runs straight through the historic centre, lined with nineteenth-century buildings. It anchors the grid of parallel streets around it.
Heading south, the Georgian Military Road follows the river valley out of the city. This is the first stretch of a historic route across the Caucasus.
