Te mapa
Gualaceo lies in the province of Azuay in the southern Andes of Ecuador, east of Cuenca. From above, the town sits on a valley floor beside the Santa Bárbara River. The centre follows the orderly Spanish colonial grid around a main plaza, and steep green slopes rise on both sides, dotted with farms and small settlements.
The town is known for its crafts, and the surrounding area has a strong tradition of ikat-dyed paño de macana shawls, as well as shoemaking and fruit orchards. On the map, the river curves through the valley with bridges linking both banks, and roads leave town in switchbacks that climb the mountainsides toward the highlands.
A Gualaceo map poster shows the tension between order and landscape: a straight colonial grid pressed into a winding Andean valley. In black and white, the river and slopes frame the regular blocks. It suits families from Azuay, emigrants who left for the United States or Spain, and visitors who explored the valley from Cuenca.
The town centre follows a regular grid of blocks around the main plaza. On the map it forms a clear, ordered core within the natural curves of the valley.
The river runs along the town, with bridges connecting the two banks. Its curving line gives the composition a natural spine through the valley.
Roads leave Gualaceo and climb the steep valley walls in tight bends. They add intricate, zigzagging lines to the edges of the poster.

Koteā ko Gualaceo
Many families from Gualaceo now live far away, and a map of the town is a way to keep the valley close. The plaza, the river and the slopes all fit in one frame, as a keepsake or a thoughtful gift.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a family name or the year you left, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 HD files are print-ready in six sizes, with no watermark.
