Gudiyatham sits in the Vellore region of northern Tamil Nadu, in a valley framed by low rocky hills. The Kaundinya river, a tributary of the Palar, passes through the town and divides it into sections that are connected by a handful of bridges. On a map the riverbed appears as a broad, pale band running between dense blocks of streets.
The town is known for its handloom weaving, especially lungis, and for small-scale industries that have shaped its neighbourhoods. The older parts of Gudiyatham have narrow, closely packed streets, while newer areas stretch along the main roads toward Vellore and the neighbouring towns.
