Te mapa
Gympie lies in south-east Queensland, on the Mary River, about two hours north of Brisbane. Its streets do not form a strict grid. They bend over ridges and down into gullies, a layout shaped by the hills and by a town that grew quickly around mining claims rather than a surveyor's plan.
The town owes its existence to the gold discovery of 1867, which drew thousands of prospectors and is often credited with helping rescue Queensland's finances at the time. Traces of that era remain in its heritage buildings and in the Mary Valley Rattler, a restored railway that runs out into the surrounding valley.
On a Gympie map poster the Mary River curves broadly around the western and northern side of town, while the older streets climb and twist across the higher ground. The Bruce Highway corridor and the rail line give the map a few long, straight strokes against the otherwise organic street pattern.
The Mary River sweeps past town in wide bends, a strong natural line that also floods from time to time and has shaped where the town could build.
The central streets follow ridges and gullies instead of a grid, so the map has a hand-drawn, meandering quality unusual for a Queensland town.
The railway and highway corridors cut long, even lines through the landscape, linking Gympie to the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the north.
