Hafizabad lies in the Rechna Doab, the flat land between the Chenab and Ravi rivers in Pakistani Punjab. It is the headquarters of a district of the same name. From above, the town is compact. A dense old core of narrow lanes and bazaars has later additions spreading outwards along the roads and railway that pass through it.
The surrounding plain is one of Punjab's most intensively farmed areas, irrigated by a network of canals that date back to the colonial era.
