Hajīn lies in eastern Syria, on the banks of the Euphrates downstream from Deir ez-Zor. Its shape from above is defined by the river: the town extends along the water rather than away from it, with streets running parallel to the bank and shorter lanes connecting them in a stretched, linear pattern.
Along the Euphrates, a narrow band of irrigated farmland follows the river, and beyond it the land turns quickly to dry steppe and desert. That contrast is one of the most striking things about this region on a map: a green ribbon of settlement and fields held tightly against the water.
