Ar Raqqah lies in northern Syria on the left bank of the Euphrates, downstream from the large reservoir formed by the Tabqa Dam. The river runs along the southern edge of the city, wide and braided with sandbanks and green islands, and on a map it forms a strong horizontal boundary. North of the river, the city spreads across flat land toward the open steppe.
The most distinctive shape within the city is the horseshoe outline of the old walled town, founded in the eighth century as al-Rafiqa under the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur. Its straight southern side faces the river and its curved wall arcs to the north. Streets inside and around it form a largely regular grid that makes the historic core easy to recognise.
Harun al-Rashid made Raqqa his residence for several years at the end of the eighth century, and the city was briefly one of the most important in the Abbasid world. It suffered heavy damage in the recent war and has been rebuilding since. An Ar Raqqah map poster holds on to the lasting form of the place: the river, the grid and the curve of the old walls.
The curved outline of the Abbasid-era city, with its straight side facing the river, is one of the most recognisable historic plans in the region and stands out clearly on the map.
The river runs along the south of the city with sandbanks and islands, a broad band that anchors the composition and separates the town from the land beyond.
Streets north of the river follow a mostly orthogonal pattern, giving the map a steady structure around the older, curved core of the walled town.

Koteā ko Ar Raqqah
For Syrians at home and abroad, a map of Raqqa can be a way to hold on to a city that has changed a great deal. It records streets and landmarks as a continuous whole, a quiet and personal object rather than a news image.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can be written in your own words, for example a family name or the neighbourhood you come from. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit your space.
