Te mapa
Harlow was designated as one of Britain's post-war new towns in 1947, and its map still shows the plan. Architect Frederick Gibberd laid out the town as a group of neighbourhoods, each with its own centre. Broad green wedges of park and open land run between them, so from above Harlow looks like islands of housing set in green.
The River Stort and its valley form the northern edge, with the railway and older villages along it. The M11 runs to the east. Inside, the roads follow a hierarchy: main distributor roads loop between neighbourhoods, and quiet cul-de-sacs branch off into the housing, so few streets carry through traffic.
A Harlow map poster shows mid-century planning at its clearest. The Water Gardens and the town centre sit at the heart of the design, and the green corridors appear as large, calm open areas across the print. For anyone interested in how towns get designed, it is a clear, legible piece.
Broad bands of open land separate the neighbourhoods. On the poster they appear as deliberate blank spaces that give the whole town its segmented, planned look.
The river and its valley run along the northern side of the town. The rail line runs beside them, giving the plan a soft natural edge.
Each district has its own curving roads and cul-de-sacs around a small centre. The pattern repeats across the map like a series of related motifs.

Koteā ko Harlow
Harlow's plan is interesting in its own right, and a map shows it better than any photograph. For people who grew up in one of its neighbourhoods, the poster has the added pleasure of finding their own close.
