Harper Map Poster & Print

Harper is the capital of Maryland County, in the far southeast of Liberia near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. It sits on Cape Palmas, a rocky headland that marks a turning point in the West African coastline. From above, the town is bounded by ocean, beaches and lagoon.

Harper grew from a settlement founded in the nineteenth century by the Maryland State Colonization Society, which for a time ran it as a separate colony before it joined Liberia. The town still has some old buildings from that period. The Cavalla River, which forms the border with Côte d'Ivoire, reaches the sea a short distance to the east.

A Harper map poster shows the town squeezed between water on several sides. The shoreline shape of the cape, the curving roads that follow it, and the lagoon inland give the drawing a strong coastal character.

01

Cape Palmas headland

The town sits on a prominent cape where the coast changes direction. Its outline is the most distinctive feature of the map.

02

Atlantic shoreline

Beaches and rocks line the edges of the town, and the open ocean fills much of the frame beyond them.

03

Lagoon behind town

Inland water lies behind the coastal strip, so the settlement looks like a narrow band of land between two waters.
