Harrisburg sits on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, which is very wide here and full of low islands. Downtown follows a grid set a little off the river's line, with the Pennsylvania State Capitol at its eastern end. Residential streets climb gently inland from the waterfront toward the ridges behind.
The river takes up a large share of any map of the city. City Island sits in the middle of the channel and is reached by the Walnut Street Bridge, a historic truss bridge now used by pedestrians. Other road and rail bridges cross the water in a series of parallel lines.
