Te mapa
Haslemere is Surrey's southernmost town, close to where Surrey meets West Sussex and Hampshire. From above it does not look like a planned grid. Its streets follow the valleys and spurs of the surrounding hills, so roads bend, fork and double back as they climb. The older centre is a short, compact high street, and newer lanes branch out from it into the woods.
The railway runs through the town on the line between London and Portsmouth, a long, gently curving line that anchors the map. Around the edges the street pattern thins quickly into large wooded areas and heathland. The town sits within the Surrey Hills, and Blackdown rises to the south just across the county line, so the landscape visibly frames the town.
A Haslemere map poster shows a town shaped by its terrain: short streets, winding lanes and a lot of green space in between. Haslemere is also linked to early music. Arnold Dolmetsch settled here and founded the Haslemere Festival in 1925, and Tennyson spent his later summers at Aldworth on the slopes of nearby Blackdown.
A short, slightly widening street at the heart of the old town. On the map it is the densest knot of lines, and the lanes around it spread outward from there.
The railway runs through the valley on a smooth curve, unlike the twisting roads around it. It gives the composition a single strong line to follow.
On every side the streets quickly give way to woodland and heath on the surrounding ridges. The open space around the town is as much a part of the map as the streets are.

Koteā ko Haslemere
Haslemere tends to mean commuter mornings at the station, walks up into the hills and a high street where people know each other. A map of it suits anyone who has settled here or left and still thinks of it as home.
