Te mapa
Haverhill lies along the Merrimack River in northeastern Massachusetts, close to the New Hampshire border. On the map, the river forms the city's southern edge, bending in a wide curve past the downtown. From there, the streets climb northward into residential neighbourhoods, with the pattern loosening as it moves into more wooded and suburban land.
The downtown was built along the riverbank and still has a denser street grid close to the water. Bridges cross the Merrimack toward neighbouring Bradford, which is now part of the city. Further north, several lakes and ponds, including Kenoza Lake, appear as irregular open shapes among the streets and green spaces.
In the nineteenth century Haverhill became one of the country's leading centres of shoe manufacturing, and many of its old factory buildings still stand near the river. A Haverhill map poster shows that industrial history in the layout itself: a compact core by the water, bridges, and neighbourhoods that grew up the hills behind it.
The broad river sweeps along the south side of the city, with bridges linking downtown to Bradford. Its width makes it one of the strongest shapes on the poster.
The old commercial and factory district sits close to the water in a tighter grid, clearly distinct from the looser residential streets on the rising ground behind it.
Kenoza Lake and other ponds in the northern part of the city appear as calm, rounded voids among the street network and surrounding woodland.
