Te mapa
Heqian lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of ridges, deep valleys and terraced slopes. Towns here cannot spread out freely, so their maps are shaped by terrain: streets run along valley floors and riverbanks, and buildings gather wherever the ground is flat enough to allow them.
The result is a linear, winding plan rather than a grid. Roads follow contours and water, bending with the land, and the settlement fits itself into the space the mountains leave. Around it, the map becomes a pattern of small winding roads linking villages across the hills.
A Heqian map poster presents this interplay between mountain and settlement in clean lines. Without colour or relief shading, the terrain still shows itself through the paths of roads and rivers, and the town appears as a compact knot of streets tucked into its valley, surrounded by open, quiet space.
Main streets run along the valley floor, keeping to level ground and giving the town a long, curving outline rather than a square one.
Roads leaving the town twist along slopes and contours, drawing loose, looping lines that reveal the shape of the hills without any shading.
Building is concentrated where the land allows, so the centre prints as a small dense cluster against the surrounding emptiness.

Koteā ko Heqian
Many people from the mountain towns of Chongqing now live in big cities, and a map of Heqian keeps the shape of home in view. It is a quiet, personal reminder rather than a souvenir.
