Wanxian Map Poster & Print

Wanxian, known today as Wanzhou, is a district of Chongqing on the Yangtze River, upstream of the Three Gorges. The city is built on steep ground, and from above its streets curve along the contours of the hills, stacked in bands above the water rather than laid out on a flat grid.

When the Three Gorges Dam raised the level of the river, large parts of the old lower town were flooded and residents moved to higher ground. The map today shows a wide stretch of water with the new city along its banks. Several bridges cross the Yangtze here, among them the long concrete arch of the Wanxian Yangtze River Bridge.

A Wanxian map poster captures a city that was partly rebuilt to meet a new river. In black and white, the broad reservoir and the winding hillside streets give the print strong contrast, with bridges linking the two banks.

The Yangtze

The river, widened by the Three Gorges reservoir, runs through the heart of the city and takes up a large part of the map.

02

Contour streets

Roads follow the slopes in long curves, climbing in layers from the riverbank toward the hills above the centre.

03

River crossings

Bridges span the Yangtze to connect districts on both banks, drawn as fine straight lines across the open water.

For people whose families lived through the move uphill, Wanxian carries real meaning, and the map records the city as it stands now. The river and hillside curves give the print a calm, flowing look.
